Jenna Hayes: We were the only ones who didnât go crazy.
It was an interesting theory, but bodies werenât discovered on the rock, and the men relied on the tender to bring them supplies and shuttle them to the mainland.
There were no other boats. How could the killer have escaped if it were one of the men there?
I thought about it. Alvin couldâve killed the others, tossed them out to the lake, then tried to swim to shore himself.
I jotted it all down in my notes, circling the âhow did the killer escapeâ part. Would he have made it to shore?
Tanner had been the lone surviving crew member from the incident, and only because heâd been on leave at the time of the disappearance.
He was also quick to blame a fight, and he became the new head keeper after the incident⦠at a time when good jobs were scarce. I circled his name, too.
The magazine had other theories, including one that involved an animal swimming onto the rock and murdering the crew.
There were torn pieces of clothing found under the dining table that night, and claw marks on a wall.
I tried to zoom in on the photo in the article. Even if I squinted my eyes a little, the picture was still too grainy to make out the scratches. I couldnât tell how large they were.
Still, I had to believe they might have been bear sized.
I brought out my phone and looked up the distance Tide Rock was from land. It was 20 miles. Not impossible for humans or animals to make the swim, but also not likely.
I took a minute to read over the full Wikipedia entry for Tide Rock, noting how the place was no stranger to deaths, and not just the three men who disappeared in 1930.
Two men also died in an accident during its construction in 1898. Then, in 1901, the hanging man incident happened. Apparently, loneliness and isolation had driven the poor man insane. That was when it was decided that four men would work at the lighthouse with three on shift at all times. And the lighthouse keepersâ living quarters was built.
Maybe Tanner was right, and Tide Rock had driven people crazy.
I looked up the full moons for 1930 next, not at all surprised to see that August 9th was one of them.
I had no idea if Buddy was a shifter or not, but if he were one, he might not have been able to control his shifting that night.
At this point, I couldnât rule anyone out.
I needed to know what Buddyâs blackmail was about. And Clarissaâs book. And everyone at Tide Rockâs secrets. Jenna had revealed some interesting ones in the article. But not hers or Tannerâs.
I wrote them all into my notes and glanced over at Scarlett, realizing the woman was staring at me as I rewound the microfilm.
And, if I was honest with myself, I probably did come across as a little odd, spending my spare time researching dead people and cases that no longer mattered.
