Because polyamory is not as well-known as other diverse relationship forms like those of gays and lesbians, poly families can often pass unnoticed, and so avoid persecution for their relationships.
Children and polyamory
Polyamorous families can be just as healthy as other families. My and othersâ research shows that there is nothing inherently dysfunctional about polyamorous families, and they are not destined to damage the children who grow up in them. The effects on children of having poly parents depend in large part on how the adults act in their relationships.
I should note that the people in my study were optimistic about polyamory, and so their kids were fairly optimistic, as well. The mainstream polyamorous communities in the United States, Australia, and Western Europe are composed primarily of white, middle-class, highly educated people. Like other middle-class white people, poly parents pass their race and class privilege on to their children. For example, kids whose parents have multiple graduate degrees (about two-thirds of the adults in my study had at least a masters degree, and almost half had a PhD) are already starting off with many advantages compared with children whose parents have less education. However, I feel that what I learned from these kids provides an accurate description of what kids experience in many poly families.
