Chapter 19 -- Marty

Once we got back to the Halifax police station, we confirmed that the man we’d captured was indeed Phil Marcovich, as we’d suspected. We had pictures of him, both from MBLIS databases and from his social media, and the photos matched the man we’d brought with us. The minute we’d gotten to the station, Hawthorne had gone to dry off, which left me to question Marcovich. I was almost excited. Finally, I was getting to do the part of every investigation that I enjoyed most. I liked finding out new information, and I enjoyed the puzzle of figuring out how to drag it out of the people we captured, even if we already mostly knew what was going on.

Marcovich was sitting in an interrogation room, facing a two-way mirror. There was a pronounced scowl on his face when I entered, and when I sat down with a pen and a notepad, he raised his eyebrows.

“Going to question me now, are you?” he asked mockingly.

“That’s my job,” I replied, taking his rudeness in stride. I had learned long ago not to take anything personally in an interrogation. “Alright. Your name is Phil Marcovich, correct?”

“You have proof?” he challenged.

“We have several pictures of you,” I told him, “many of which you posted to your own social media accounts.”

“Fine, then,” Marcovich conceded. “I’m Phil Marcovich. What else do you want to know?”

“Do you know anything about the cruise ship Sapphire Jewel?” I asked.

“Never heard of it,” Marcovich said blandly.

“Are you sure?” I pressed. “Do you know a man named Neil Lennox?”

“Sure,” Marcovich agreed. “He was my buddy in the Navy. What’s he up to these days?” He had gone from outright belligerence to casual conversation just a little too quickly, and the fact that he was already lying was definitely incriminating.

“I’d ask you that question,” I replied, “seeing as you’re in touch. I found your name on his social media pages.”

“Well, he’s an old friend,” Marcovich repeated. “But you know no one tells the truth about themselves on social media. Neil’s always posting pictures of himself all over the Caribbean, though.”

“Do you know what he does for a living?” I pressed.

“He sails one of those cruise ships, doesn’t he?” Marcovich asked. “Easy money for someone like him. I don’t blame him.”

“Do you know where he is right now?” I asked.

“No idea.” Marcovich spread out his palms and shook his head. “Could be on the moon for all I’ve heard.”

“Interesting,” I mused. “And the Stargazer is your boat?”

“You know it is,” Marcovich told me. Hostility was creeping back into his tone. I leaned forward.

“What do you use that boat for, ordinarily?” I asked.

“I use it to get away,” Marcovich explained. “I go out on the water for a day or two, sometimes longer, and I find some kind of peace out there. It’s a good break from the corporate world.”

“And how did you and your boat wind up here in Halifax?” I prodded. “Given that you’re a resident of New York City.
