HAWTHORNE

The walk over to the police station wasn’t the most relaxing, and it was largely due to the prospect of revealing a weakness in the chief inspector’s ranks. I wasn’t sure how Murphy would handle the news, and there was always the chance that Murphy was in on it. We’d have to watch his reaction carefully.

On the bright side, the rest back at the hotel coupled with the caffeine had made a huge difference in my outlook, and although we’d only slept for a few hours, my brain already felt sharper and more attuned to the details it needed to pick up. I was sure it would be another long day, but this time, I was ready for it.

I looked over at Angie a couple of times as we walked, and I could read the tension in her features that I was sure mimicked my own, but she seemed revitalized too, especially once she finished her sandwich. She tossed the crumpled bag into a nearby bin as we passed it, and the small grin she shot my way was her way of silently telling me she was as ready as I was.

The police station came up ahead of us, and when we reached the front doors, Angie reached for the handle, paused to take a deep, steadying breath, and swung it open, holding it for me to grab so I could follow her into the building. The hustle and bustle of the bullpen was familiar and comforting, and my eyes darted toward the coffeemaker in the hopes of spotting some more pastries. I was disappointed to find the table empty beside the coffeemaker until I remembered McGinnis had worked the night shift. I’d already sampled the most recent batch. My sweet tooth would have to wait.

“Stop distracting yourself,” Angie teased as she paused ahead of me and looked back to catch me eyeing the empty table.

“You’re right.” I sighed. “It’s easier to dream of pastries than what we’re about to do.”

“Yeah, I know,” she replied sympathetically. “I feel the same way.”

I caught up to her, and we walked side by side through the bullpen toward Murphy’s office in the back. I kept my head on a swivel, looking for signs of Walsh, but I didn’t see him, which was a relief. It’d be easier to handle this without him around.

Angie reached Murphy’s office door a second before I did, so she knocked a few times and waited for his response. A booming, “Come in!” could be heard through the wood, so she swung the door open and poked her head inside.

“Hey, Chief Inspector,” she greeted warmly. “Do you have a moment?”

“For you two?” Murphy replied, making eye contact with me over Angie’s shoulder from his seat behind the desk. “Of course. Come on in.”

Angie shut the door behind me as we entered the office. Murphy was alone in the space, and although he had some papers scattered around the desk before him, he didn’t seem particularly frazzled or distracted.

“We’re sorry to interrupt you,” I said anyway, eyeing the paperwork.
