HE REFOCUSED TO look for where the journal could be located. He leaned down to look over the various dusty objects placed on the old shelves under the counter. Eyeing the last corner of the shelf, he noticed a wooden box, dustless and hidden behind several coffee cans filled with old nails. He pulled out the box, cautious to touch nothing else just in case his search was fruitless. Its small brass latch was flicked open and the top slowly turned up. It was there.

Kendrick carefully removed the journal, its cracked, black leather looked like aged skin under the buzzing florescent lights. He set it aside as he inspected several weathered Polaroids that had been placed at the bottom of the journal. They were all of children, each identified merely with a number. It was number seven that made him freeze. It was him, taken several years earlier on his mother’s porch. He never recalled posing for the picture and its angle suggested it was taken from the street. Looking back at the others, he noticed the same – all were taken secretly.

Looking up at the wall, he noticed the same elusive angles in the surveillance pictures of Celia Leigh and the other two killings. Smith had selected him just as he had those on the wall. Kendrick shoved the photos into the journal and rushed out of the room without worrying about Smith discovering the intrusion. Apprentice or prey, he wasn’t going to wait around to find out where he stood.
