I watched in silence as Bailey worked her magic with her herbal potions on Tip’s wound. As she dressed it in some sort of muddy concoction, she sipped this tea Bailey had prepared in response to Danica’s request of sedation.

“You spiked the tea, didn’t you, Little?” Tip asked as her eyelids blinked slower and slower. “You told me it was to dull the pain, but you slipped me a mickey, damn you.”

She leaned over and looked right in her face. “I lied. Of course, you won’t feel any pain after you drink it. You just won’t feel anything else, either.”

“Damn you. We have…work to do…”

“And we’ll do it,” Bailey answered. “Just not right now. Has it ever occurred to you the rest of us might need to rest? Need to juice up? You’re not the only super in the game, you know.”

I admired her tenacity. Not many of us would have tried to speak to Tiponi Redhawk in such a harsh manner.

“How long?” She was fading fast.

Bailey looked at her watch. It was a little after five in the afternoon. “See you tomorrow morning.”

Tip tried to open her eyes, but to no avail. “Damn you…Little…Never shoulda let you…two outta…” and that was all she wrote. Tip faded into the warm bosom of a sedative.

“God, I never thought she’d go down, the stubborn SOB.”

I smirked. “She sure can be.” Helping Bailey to her feet I asked, “Why did she keep calling you little?”

Bailey chuckled. “Nickname. Short for Dr. Doolittle. Tip would give anything to be able to do what I do. It fits more in with her heritage than it does mine.”

I smiled at her. “Then she’s more than stubborn. She’s a geek.”

Just then, Danica stuck her head in the room. “Clark, there’s something here you need to see.”

I left Bailey to finish up with Tip and followed Danica into the great room.

On the table sat Danica’s vidbook. “Finn called while you guys were on the water. You need to see this.”

Leaning over, I watched as Danica pressed play. Finn’s face popped up on the screen.

“Echo—I can’t just sit by here watching this insanity knowing you’re somehow in the middle of it all. I’ve got to do something. So, I’m cashing in on some comp time I’ve got and will be catching a military transport in about a half an hour. I have no idea where you’re staying or what you’re doing, but I’ve made arrangements to help out in St. Bernard’s Parish. The cops there really need some help, so my chief has okayed the trip. Man…” Finn shook her head. “What the fu-what in the hell have you gotten yourself into? Anyway, by the time you get this, I’ll already be in the air. Stay safe and know this is just something I have to do. I’ll be looking for you. You know where I’ll be, so do the same. I…I miss you a lot. Take care, please.”

“Shit, Clark. We need Deputy Dog here like we need a hole in the head.
