CHAPTER FOURTEEN

For as much noise as he’d made and all his unbridled curiosity, Gonzalez remained still and quiet for a remarkable time. Given the same extensive, specialized field training each of them had received to become Hellion operatives in the first place, it wasn’t all that remarkable. However, this wasn’t a field exercise or a smaller side mission, and there weren’t any superiors to impress or report to.

Emily almost forgot the big guy had been sitting on his rock this whole time, and she would have been nearly satisfied with how her temporary escape attempt had panned out.

Then Gonzalez decided he’d spent enough time holding his silence while they did nothing up here. Or maybe he couldn’t help himself anymore.

“So what’s your deal, Trigger?”

Her back stiffened as his voice rumbled blunderingly through the peaceful tropical hum around them the way the big guy crashed through the jungle on the way out.

Maybe he’ll give up if I say nothing this time.

“I mean, like, I know you got transferred after the whole Russia thing. Temporarily. Hell of a fuckup like that? Makes sense they’d wanna move you around a little.”

Gritting her teeth, Emily clenched her fists in her lap and wished he’d drop all the damn talking already.

“We got most of the details,” he continued as if she’d invited him to keep going. “I think. Mission failed, whole thing busted wide open, but you guys brought home six of ours who wouldn’t’ve made it home anytime soon otherwise. That kinda evens it out. Sorta.”

Great. He doesn’t want a conversation. He wants to share all his shitty opinions.

Still, she said nothing and kept trying to focus on the peace she’d so briefly been able to capture.

“But something else happened out there, didn’t it?” Gonzalez sniffed, sighed, and smacked his lips. “Had to. You were with Bravo. Not like they’re better than any other Hellion team, but you guys have a serious reputation. Had. Have. I don’t know. Maybe without you, it’s back to where it was.”

Fighting back a growl of frustration, Emily peeked through one eyelid and tried not to visibly move as she glanced at her watch, thinking they’d only been sitting in silence for maybe five minutes. Ten, tops.

It had been forty.

Huh.

“You know what I don’t get about the whole thing?” He cleared his throat, then paused as if he wanted to choose his next words specifically. “Why would Command send Bravo out for an illegal arms bust? I mean, yeah, Russia. That checks. But not for Bravo. They send you guys out when they need the real heavy hitters, right? What the hell did you guys lose up there?”

Finally, Emily had to give up on reacquiring her momentary peace and open her eyes. “I’m not talking to you about Russia, dude. Drop it.”

“Eh. That’s fine.”

In the next brief silence, the tranquility and natural flow up here at the top of the waterfall felt awkward. It was expected when this guy had brought up some of Emily’s most epic failures out of the blue and thrown them in her face.
