Reggie Fisher awoke to the sound of intense coughing. He wished it was disturbing him because it was unusual. Unfortunately, that brutal hacking noise had become all too familiar in his life.

Normally when he awoke, it was a rapid transition. A gift of his advanced genetics. It had nothing to do with how well he had slept. It was quite simply how quickly his mind could reorient to the real world. How rapidly could it absorb what his senses were reporting to him and connect with prior experiences to banish any confusion.

This time, the change came slow. He took in the pleasant wood finishing and wallpaper that tried to transform the hospital room into something more akin to a hotel suite. The medical machines that were a necessary part of the room’s functionality were ensconced in the walls or bedframe, further reducing the sense of being in an Intensive Care Unit.

Ultimately, one couldn’t deny that the room was precisely that.

Reggie hadn’t been moved since he had fallen asleep. That made his slow adjustment even more frustrating. The room should have been instantly familiar, but his mind was reeling, wondering why he wasn’t in his bedroom at home. Damn this mental fog! I feel like I’m withering away!

As the confusion faded, he did an orderly check of his memory to ensure his faculties weren’t compromised. He recalled that he was deep in the heart of the central CDC HQ, sequestered in a small cluster of rooms that were entirely controlled by the Dawn. As the Director of the facility, Matthew Rostlen had segmented off this section completely. Reggie was fairly certain that if someone looked at the blueprints for the building, this portion would be missing or labeled as solid concrete filling.

There were limits to even what the director of the facility could arrange. As such, there wasn’t a massive, hidden space within the HQ. And the lab where the bulk of the U.S.-based Dawn’s Persterim research was carried out took up a good chunk of it.

The ICU was so rarely used, held in reserve for the occasional, yet inevitable, eventuality that one of the Dawn’s highest members needed such care. In the two decades of their existence, only two of its ‘Diamond’ members had been stricken with conditions brought on by old age that couldn’t be treated in their own homes. As such, the entire ICU consisted of a single room with two beds and an adjoining area for observation. Nearby was pharmaceutical storage room, a small lab to conduct some limited tests, and a catch-all staging area for anything being brought into the patients.

That explained why even someone as respected as Reggie Fisher, Director of Covert Surveillance for the Dawn, did not warrant a private room. There simply wasn’t any.

The person in the other bed was the one who had coughed loudly enough to wake him. Reggie didn’t hold it against him. He had suffered his own fits, rattling the bed he laid on. Complaining about the other man would be the worst sort of hypocrisy.
