Trees

Everywhere/today

the irises insisted

on waving their blue flags

Hairy tongued things

with mouths

hanging open

as if to fuck the air

O la la la spring

& dying

the usual song

“Every flower in a garden / is a sign

of a complete failure”

the landscape designer declared

Why not salute the trees

They take a long time to die

& then can die only half way

for a long time

for a long time

be half alive

Summit

One had thought to be here

years before. Had read

about the clouds.

Even the clouds have changed.

They float

the way the nineteenth-century mind

moved across the sky

they say. I don’t know.

“Up in the sky just you and I

are lost, lost”

in this specific thrill

we’re lost in the world

of a height we don’t need

to fall from. I’m awake, you’re

asleep. We’ll die

but let’s forget that

again. Have we missed

all the important things

in life. Some days

thoughts swell and pulse a mood

of mind I never notice

except when stilled

like now, here, on an Alp.
