FARRAH

Farrah’s eyes blinked open, and then quickly closed again, against bright sunlight streaming through window. A faint beeping sound could be heard, and a medicinal smell permeated the air. She should probably have felt disoriented, but Farrah knew exactly where she was—the hospital.

She remembered everything, and now it was time to see just how well she’d played her part.

“Hello, Dr. De Biasi. So glad to see you’re awake.”

The deep voice, one she recognized, came from her left, near the door. She squinted, trying to see her visitor, while allowing her eyes to adjust to the obscenely obnoxious light.

“Sergeant Rey…” Her throat was sore, and her voice raspy. She cleared it as best as she could and went on. “Sergeant Reynolds, where am I?”

“You’re at Rush University Medical Center. You were shot during a home invasion. You had emergency surgery and have been sedated for nearly forty-eight hours.” His eyes peered intently into Farrah’s. “Please, Doc, I know you are probably feeling rough, but if you can, tell me anything you can remember. Anything at all.”

She tried to sit up, but the pain in her abdomen was intense. Reynolds stepped forward and pushed the button to raise the head of her bed.

“Thank you,” she said, placing her hand over the bandage which covered a large portion of her torso. “I’ll tell you everything I remember, but first, will you please tell me how Javi is?”

Reynolds inhaled grimly, jaw clenched, head bowed. “Paramedics found him in your kitchen. Nothing could be done.”

Tears streamed down Farrah’s cheeks.

“I’m so sorry, Sergeant Reynolds. His death is my fault. If he hadn’t been protecting me...”

Allowing her a few moments to collect herself, Reynolds once again asked her to share everything she remembered.

“We had pizza for dinner and then watched a movie,” she said. “After that, I went upstairs to get a shower and told Javi to help himself to anything in the fridge. I was gone maybe twenty minutes. When I came back downstairs, he was...on the floor...with several bullet wounds. I ran for my phone, which I’d left in my bedroom. I wanted to call nine-one-one and then get started on resuscitation.” Her hands clutched the sheet in a death grip. “Halfway up the stairs, I heard footsteps, saw someone. A large figure wearing a balaclava. I don’t know for sure if it was a male or not, but the build was more masculine—broad shoulders, narrow hips, a bit of a gut where men typically carry weight.” She sniffled. “I’m sorry, but would you mind handing me a tissue?”

Reynolds patiently obliged and handed her the white Kleenex. After she wiped her tears and blew her nose, she continued.

“I grabbed my phone and headed for the closet, which locks from the inside. But he...he was too damn fast. Before I could get the door closed, he out-muscled me. Shot me—I don’t even know how many times—and left me for dead. I remember trying to call nine-one-one before I passed out, but I can’t remember actually succeeding.” She gave a bitter grin.
