All this requires exactly what Stanley Crouch called a “high-minded but realistic courage, one that demanded faith and vigilant engagement.” Without a huge reset on law enforcement and criminal justice, Chicago’s future—and that of other big cities under the exact same stressors—will continue to trickle away.

Individuals at risk of becoming criminals don’t have to go that way. They’re not pieces moved on a chess board by more powerful forces. Hundreds of thousands of Chicago’s one million households do the right things daily. The problem, as in politics, is the tyranny of the minority. The damage inflicted by thugs who shoot, kill, and carjack for utterly stupid reasons is far out of proportion to their numbers. If Chicago’s streets stay as they are, half the city dies slowly. Or maybe not so slowly. And then from the sheer weight of that, perhaps the rest.
