I told you so.
Those words have been on the tip of my tongue all week, and Iâve been itching to say them to my wife, but I havenât done so yet. Thatâs because saying such a thing would only give me a very brief moment of satisfaction before the inevitable argument started, and that wonât do any of us any good. But it doesnât mean that Iâm not still massively tempted. After all, a brief moment of satisfaction, however fleeting, is very appealing considering the future my family is facing now.
As I feared, reporting what happened to the police has eventually led to them apprehending the suspects, and now they are being prepared for trial. Despite doing my best to not give the police anything, the video my son provided them was damning, clearly showing the faces of the two men, the fact they were digging a hole for a body and the gun they brandished. The bullet holes in the trees, the car registration, along with my familyâs story means those two men are now going to need their defence lawyers to work miracles for them in court.
Court.
Nothing can really happen until we go there. Thatâs where we will give our testimonies, and thatâs where any punishments will be handed down. But I donât want to go there because I canât think of anything worse than having to provide evidence against dangerous gang members for all the world to see. Okay, so the detective in charge of the case has already hinted that we will be able to give our evidence in a discreet manner, our faces shielded and our voices disguised so that the accused wonât really know who is doing it. But while that sounds good in theory, itâs a load of nonsense in reality. Thatâs because there is no way the suspects wonât know who is doing the talking. Just because weâre behind a curtain or blurred out on a video link with some robot saying our words, it doesnât mean they are stupid. They will know it is the family of four who they shot at in the woods.
So they will know exactly who is to blame when they receive their inevitable sentences.
The Halliwell Gang will be out for blood if we testify against them. I donât know much about the criminal underworld, but one thing I have picked up from all the various TV shows and films I have watched over the years is that the people involved in illicit activity only hate one thing more than the police.
A grass, otherwise known as a rat, otherwise known as anybody who reveals the details of somebody elseâs wrongdoing, effectively ensuring that person is screwed in the eyes of the law.
But thatâs what my family will become if we give evidence in court, and the means and methods of how we are doing it wonât matter. The gang members in the dock and the gang members in the public gallery wonât give a damn if the authorities have tried their best to obscure our identities.
