Today, an actor, writer, director, or crew member will sign a contract to make a single movie. But in the 1930s and 1940s, most people signed a long-term contract with a studio. The studios always had numerous movies in production. When actors finished one film, they often went straight into preparing for another. Meanwhile, set designers, carpenters, seamstresses, and musicians worked nonstop, creating everything that was needed to make many movies at a time. By the late 1930s, MGM was completing one movie every nine days.
MGM was one of the biggest and best studios in Hollywood. When they got the rights to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, there was no question that it would be another spectacular MGM hit. It wasâbut there were a lot of bumps in the yellow brick road along the way.
