If we take seriously the idea that the body is a site of EJ struggle, then all forms of captivity are environmental injustices, since they harm the body. That is a productive way of thinking about the link between prisons and EJ because it refuses reform and points to the necessity of abolition. Sexual violence directed at individual bodies of prisoners reveals the ways that such microscale environmental injustices are inescapably linked to and supportive of macroscale environmental injustices focused on entire populations of people. The effects of such violence targeting one person or one body ripples across populations and communities, through an ecology of repression and brutality that requires a transformative response.
