The Grand Tapestry
Because no words in our language can adequately describe exactly what I experienced in the nonphysical realm, I frequently use the metaphor of a tapestry to symbolize how I saw that our lives are woven together with the threads of others’ lives. Imagine billions of threads spun from every sort of material imaginable, all sparkling with life. There’s a different thread representing each and every person who has ever lived, and they’re intricately woven together to create amazing, textured images with complex, colorful patterns. The threads intertwine, weaving up, down, around, and through one another with scintillating beauty and grace. The whole tapestry seems alive—a living creation that is quickened by the interweaving of all the individual threads as they form mountains, oceans, elephants, mangoes, skyscrapers, airplanes, sofas, you, me, and everything else that has ever come into being.
Now imagine if you were to follow one strand of thread as it travels through the tapestry, looping in and out of the weave, over and under, touching some threads here, going over others there, slipping under still others later on. This one strand doesn’t touch all the threads directly, but some of the threads that it does touch also touch other threads throughout the woof and warp of the entire fabric. As a whole, all the strands connect to make one beautifully cohesive and cosmic work of art that tells an exquisite, balanced story. No individual thread can be extracted without changing everything. Each thread is indispensable to the overall image and is a vital element of the story. That one thread I asked you to follow is a metaphor for you . . . and your life.
While we are living out our lives here in the physical realm, we cannot see the whole tapestry with all its amazing stories and images or how each thread helps make up the entirety. We are aware only of our present moment—one point in time along the journey of our single strand. From this limited perspective, we do our best with what we know in each moment to weave the story that we want told. We may later regret the story we wove, but we know no better in that moment.
Nevertheless, it’s important to remember that no matter how we may view the story from the perspective of our physical world, the entire tapestry is perfect from the vantage point of the nonphysical realm. From that higher perspective, everything is as it should be. It cannot be improved upon! So when I was in that other realm, I did not perceive myself as just a single thread. I had an omniscient view of the whole, and I was able to see and feel and understand the entire story woven since forever, including how I was connected to all other threads—combining now with this one, now with that one.
After I ran away from the marriage my parents arranged for me many years ago, I felt guilty for bringing shame to my family and my fiancé’s family.
