Over an hour later, I help Eli load Casey into his car. She and Manda cried until very gradually, Casey Black disappeared. It was eerie witnessing such a rapid retreat into herself, but within twenty minutes, her eyes were glazed over and tear-free. She stopped responding and just sat emotionless even as Manda talked to her. I began to worry, but Eli assured me that she was okay and that he would take care of her.

And as I shut the door with her lying across the seat, her head resting in his lap, I have no doubt that she is in the best possible hands. He would do absolutely anything for that woman, and whether she wants him or not, she needs him more than I think she realizes.

“You want to go home?” I ask Manda as we watch Eli’s taillights disappear.

“Tell me that when I wake up, this will all have been a dream. Tell me this isn’t real, Caleb.” She turns to look up at me.

I can’t tell her that at all. So I release a loud sigh and drag her against my chest. I honestly don’t know how any of us will move forward from this.
