IF JESUS WAS SERIOUS … THEN WE WILL PRACTICE SELF-AWARENESS AND NOT SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS.

WHY IS IT SO EASY to see others’ faults and so difficult to see our own? Jesus tells us to remove the plank in our own eye before we seek to remove the speck in our brother’s. It is a call to self-awareness rather than self-righteousness. We see vivid examples of this in the story of Jesus’ own arrest and suffering.

Consider the duplicity of the Sanhedrin. They could have arrested Jesus while He taught openly at the temple. Instead, they snatched Him in the middle of the night outside the city to avoid public outcry. Then they held a trial under the cover of darkness so no one could come to Jesus’ defense. Finally, the Sanhedrin arranged for false witnesses to testify against Jesus to fabricate a reason to execute Him. They used their power to protect their status rather than seek justice. They manipulated the judicial system against an innocent man in order to maintain control.

The Sanhedrin repeatedly, blatantly broke God’s law, all the while they were attempting to find just one speck of sin in Jesus’ eye. They were so blinded by their self-righteousness that they could no longer discern right from wrong or godliness from wickedness.

This is a warning to all of us who cling to a religious identity while judging the nonreligious people around us. We may become so convinced of our righteousness that we fail to see our own duplicity. When you feel the impulse to judge another, instead consider praying, “Lord, show me the plank in my own eye.”
