Dear Nobody,

I had a good day. I think, for the first time, my ability worked for something good.

I hope you had a good day, too.

Sincerely,

Your Love

Chapter 13

Mom

Winter, 2006

Mom collapsed.

I was in school and got a call from Emma. I had a bad feeling about this. Emma never called me in the middle of the day unless there was an urgent matter. When she told me that she was taken to the hospital, my head went completely blank.

My mom. The only family left for me in this world next to Emma. The only person who accepted who I am and loved me the most.

I got to the hospital as fast as I could. I asked one of the nurses at the front, told her my mother’s name is Elizabeth, and she told me her room is on the third floor. I couldn’t wait for the elevators. They were moving too slow. I took the stairs and ran up as fast as I could. It felt like the stairs were an endless staircase in the darkness that leads to no exit. But, I could see a tiny light coming out from the top. And I ran and ran toward the light.

I reached the room, thinking of the worst.

No. No Mom. Don’t leave me alone.

I opened the door with my sweaty hand, and I looked around to find my mom, who still kept loving me even after I screwed up everything.

“Hey, sweetheart! Thanks for coming!” Mom said from one of the corner beds next to the windows. She was talking to Emma who was sitting across from her.

“Mom!? Are you alright?”

“Look at me! I’m as healthy as I could ever be! After this infusion is done, I can go home!” said Mom with her usual smile.

I took a deep sigh. My panting from running up the stairs started catching up.

“I was so worried when Emma called me you collapsed during work and brought to the hospital. I thought . . .” I said, breathing hard.

“Oh, I’m sorry, honey. I wasn’t brought in by an ambulance. On my break, I started having my usual migraine and took a pain killer. But it didn’t go away as usual. Then I started feeling exhausted. I tried to get up from a chair, but I couldn’t stand up well, and I wobbled a bit. My coworker got really worried about me, and she drove me here to check up on me. So, I didn’t really collapse. But sorry that I worried you. It’s all good now.”

Her doctor said the reason was probably her being overworked. That made total sense. Mom worked twelve hours a day from Monday to Saturday. She only took a half-day off on Sundays. But for the last six years, she had never taken a day off.

The doctor told her to rest up for a couple of days and take it easy to care about her health more.

“Mom, you can’t go to work! You have to rest up until tomorrow! Did you forget what the doctor said to you!?” Emma said to Mom.
