Emerson sat in the meeting, taking her notes. She checked the clock on her laptop and noticed that they should be wrapping up soon. She was starving and wanted to see if Talon could grab lunch today.

“Before we head out, I wanted to make a quick announcement: Mike Rob is leaving us for a new endeavor. He’ll be wrapping up here for the next couple of weeks, and we wish him all the best.”

Emerson perked up at that. Mike Rob – one of the many, many Mikes that worked here, and thus, had a nickname combining his first and middle names – was leaving. He was the third VP of Sales Emerson had worked under since starting here, and if he was leaving, that meant his job was available. She hadn’t applied the previous two times the role had been opened. The first time, she still felt too new, and she and Talon had just told the company they were together. Had Emerson got the job back then, Talon would’ve been her direct report again. The second time, the job hadn’t even been opened. The Chief Revenue Officer had brought in Mike Rob, someone he’d worked with before, as a replacement. Now, Mike Rob was leaving, and Emerson wondered if the job was up for grabs.

“We’ll be opening the role soon internally. After five days, if needed, we’ll open it up externally,” their CRO continued. “And we’ll have a going-away happy hour for Mike Rob Friday at four in the kitchen for anyone who wants to join.”

The meeting ended with everyone asking Mike Rob questions about the new job while Emerson rushed out the first chance she got to find Talon. Obviously, if she got this job, Talon would technically be a direct report again, but they’d been together for over six years now, and they were married – it wasn’t the same as the first time.

“Hey. Lunch?” Emerson asked, walking into the office they shared.

“Yeah, I’m starving.”

“Can we drive somewhere?” Emerson asked.

“Drive? You don’t just want to–”

“I have to talk to you about something.”

“Oh,” Talon said. “Yeah, let’s go.”

A few minutes later, they were in the car and on the road.

“So, what’s going on?” Talon asked.

“Mike Rob just put in his notice.”

“Shit. Really?” Talon asked.

“Yeah. And they’re opening the role this time.”

“You want it,” Talon stated in response.

“Yes,” Emerson confirmed, pulling them into the parking lot of a restaurant she knew they both liked. Car parked and turned off, she turned to Talon and added, “I know we’ve talked about this the last time, and you said you weren’t interested in being the VP, but I want to make sure that’s still the case, because if you are, I don’t want it.”

Talon laughed and said, “Hell, no. I don’t want to be the VP of Sales. And even if I did, I wouldn’t want you to not apply, Em. If I wanted it, too, we’d figure it out, but I don’t want it.”

“I’m not going for the same job as you – our marriage comes first.
