The Lie That Leads to Overspending

There may be other root sources for indebtedness than just thoughtless overspending. A family might be in financial trouble because of mounting medical expenses. One sweet family I know has a child with cystic fibrosis. They spend all the money they make and more trying to keep their child alive. As it happens sometimes in this country, they make too much money to qualify for financial assistance. However, they don’t make enough to be able to comfortably pay for all that is needed to meet the medical needs. The very poor are taken care of, and the very rich take care of themselves, but working middle-class families are often left out in the cold.

Without an intervention from God, this family lives knowing they will never be out of debt. That’s just reality. And there is no other alternative for them but to continue doing what they have to do. They have accepted the fact that they will never be able to retire, and they will be working to pay off medical expenses until they die.

Other than a catastrophic situation like the cystic fibrosis parents, what could be another root cause of indebtedness? We might think we are in debt because we spend more money than we bring in. And that’s never a good plan. But the ultimate problem regarding debt could be what we believe. In fact, money problems began in the garden of Eden. How could that be, you ask? What tricked Eve into the deception Satan managed was that she believed the lies he told her. If you are in debt, it may be because you have also unknowingly believed a lie.

In the garden, the first thing Satan did was cast doubt on God’s word: “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden?’” Eve answered, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’”

Where did Eve get that last bit of her statement—the touch it part? She added to what God said. Then Satan contradicted God’s word: “You surely will not die!” he said.

Satan went from casting doubt on God’s word, to debating God’s word, to questioning God’s care for us: “For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” This implies God doesn’t have our best interest in mind. (See Genesis 3.)

The enemy of our souls has us right where he wants us when he can get us to believe the lie that God is not good, the lie that God is withholding something positive from us.

Eve, believing the lie, saw that the food was good, she desired it, she took it, she ate it, and then she gave it to her husband. The end result was a breach between God and mankind.
