Chapter Fourteen

Rosalie began to poke and prod me as I stood staring after Brielle. Where was she going, and who would she tell about our discussion?

Just because we shared an enemy didn’t mean she wasn’t above sabotaging my plans.

My very limited plans.

The fairies whispered together and Rosalie shushed them, although she was kind, like a mother to her children. Brielle had never known such kindness. If I managed to drag her into the human realm, how would she fit in? There wasn’t enough time for me to teach her about life there, and I sure wasn’t the best person to do it.

My motto: Avoid the unknown. Unknown people, unknown places, unknown situations.

It was no way to live, and Brielle wouldn’t be any happier with a life like that. I should know.

Her attachment to Lantis, and his to her, would be problematic as well.

“Hey, are those sea shells?”

My thoughts were interrupted by my realization that the buttons on the gown were actually miniature shells. My parents had a glass vase filled with sea shells from their honeymoon in Florida, of all different sizes and shapes, some pink, others more orange.

When I was a little girl, I had loved to hold the larger shells to my ears, closing my eyes and imagining the waves and the sand, the sound of the ocean filling my mind as I pressed the shell against my head.

“Yes, my lady. Is that not the custom where you are from?”

Rosalie’s smile was the same as the one she offered the smaller fairies, and I appreciated her patience with me. I was a complete stranger, and she was instructed to serve me, whether she wanted to or not.

I thought of the metal button on my jeans. And the key in my jeans pocket.

“Actually, we have buttons. They’re usually round, and made out of plastic, or metal.”

All of the fairies stopped to listen to me, as if I was lecturing on something incredibly fascinating.

“Plastic?”

“Buttons . . .”

They chattered together, without reprimand from Rosalie, but I had grown curious. From all I had seen of Faerie, it was meadows and forests, with the occasional lake. Where in the world - or in Faerie - had these shells come from?

I wasn’t sure if lakes could produce shells, but I decided to risk sounding stupid and ask.

“Did these come from a lake?”

My gaze was focused on the small hands that continued to pat at me, although the shells were fastened in their silk hooks and for all practical purposes, I looked dressed and ready to go. The shells themselves, although uniformly tiny, were of varied shapes and colors.

“Oh, no, my lady. The sea. Do you not know what the sea is?”

I looked up quickly, only to have my attention drawn back down when a flash of something glinted in the sunlight that crept through the small window opening. I jumped backward, nearly knocking Rosalie over, when I saw that it was a knife, carved from something bright and ivory that resembled a large animal tooth.
