Ray was lurking around the corner of Margaretâs home when her little white and brown shih tzu started barking and came tearing around the house. Margaret followed the dog with a look of bewilderment on her face. Clearly, she let the dog out to potty as she did every afternoon. The dog might actually bite him, he thought with bemusement.
Heâd been waiting for her. He leaned casually on the side of her white two-story colonial-style home. He knew things, he watched, and he waited. He knew her routine. Even though she had no neighbors around for miles, his car sat in a vantage point where he could observe. Night was setting in. It was that time before dark when things start to look hazy, right after sunset.
âEvening, Margaret.â Ray stepped out from the corner of her house. Margaret screamed. Her hair was a little flat and she had no makeup on. Her flat slip-on tennis shoes made her seem even shorter than she really was. Her eyes narrowed and she put her hands on her hips.
âWhat are you doing here?â Margaret spat the words out like she had a bad taste in her mouth. âWe have no business, you and I.â Despite herself, Margaret put her hand to the back of her head and attempted to pouf her hair. She was the most casual heâd ever seen her. She was wearing jeans and a t-shirt. He was surprised she owned such attire.
Ray chuckled. He was rather casual himself in a workout shirt with the sleeves cut off and shorts. He seemed to have more gray hair popping up every time he looked in the mirror. This time of summer found him with a tan which made him a shade darker.
âYouâre right. We didnât. Now we do.â His casual tone turned serious. âWhy did I see your granddaughter in town, Margaret?â
âSheâs here? In Missouri? Are you sure?â Margaretâs eyes were wide with pretend surprise. She stared at him.
Rayâs eyes took on a hard edge and he quickly covered the ground between them. âI think you know sheâs here. In fact, I think you set this all up. Whatâs your game, woman?â
Margaret flinched. âFine,â she said. She rolled her eyes and dropped the act. âThereâs money in that house still and sheâs going to lead me to it.â
âMoney?â Ray laughed, revealing his perfectly straight, white teeth. âNo. If there was, I wouldâve found it by now. And you know I was looking. I have hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical debt and a dead wife to show for it. No thanks to your daughter and that thief of a son-in-law you had.â
âWhat are you planning?â Margaret tried to remain casual.
âWell, dear Margaret. Iâm going to have to kill that granddaughter of yours. I didnât get to kill Krysta. Someone in that family has to pay for what Jason did to me. Besides, sheâs probably just like her mother. Rotten, the whole generation of you. Should I kill you instead?â
âStop being so dramatic, Ray.
