Yup.

Ward sipped on his coffee and watched a few pedestrians walk by, eager for the call that came a moment later.

“Ward, whatcha got?”

“Well, first, the old guy at your shooting?”

Ward’s eyebrows rose with curiosity.

“He didn’t make it, Jake.”

“Aw, hell.”

“Was ok for a while, but complications took him.”

Ward bit his lip in frustration. Good people dying for no reason. Were his slow reflexes to blame? In the shock of what was happening, he had delayed, costing the man his life. How could he have been so friggin slow?

“Shit,” Ward said, not knowing what else to say.

“Yeah.” Foley cleared his throat. “Back to the autopsy. Doc cleared her schedule and got it done right away, but I have more questions than answers. I know union rules say I can’t bug you except through an intermediary or some crap, but you’re the smartest guy I know, you’re knee-deep in this, and I gotta run it by you."

Ward smiled. “Bosses know you’re calling me?”

“Nope. Let’s keep it that way.”

“Got it.”

“Ok, here’s what I got. Dude is shot. Four times. Two fresh ones, yours. One in the right lung, the other nicked his aorta. Didn’t last long, bled out internally.”

“Okay. Four, though?”

“Yeah, two other shots. Mostly healed.”

“What do you mean, healed?”

“Yeah, if they were from the shootout with Jenkins, no way they would heal this fast. Still scabbed a little on the outside, but much of the internal tissue is fixed. Medical examiner says several weeks of healing, maybe more.”

“Were the rounds still in him?”

“Yours were. None from Jenkins. No exit wounds, so he must have had some medical attention. Nobody could remove two rounds that deep without help. Unless they were impervious to pain.”

Ward struggled with the implications. Either the wrong guy, or he heals fast. Must be wrong guy. But it was him! Ward saw those eyes. It. Was. Him.

“It gets weirder, Jake. Small, pinpoint scars on the skin of the skull. Dozens of them. Too big to be a needle, no clue what caused them. Doc thinks they are scars from radiation treatments, but she’s never seen so many on a single subject before. I didn’t even see them til she pointed them out, they were that small.”

“I’ve always been impressed with her.”

Foley continued, “Doc started going through his brain, slicing it to inspect the layers like she always does, but she stopped cold. Never seen her do it in the middle of an autopsy and I’ve attended dozens. She stopped, grabbed another assistant, and they started taking pictures like mad. Every slice of tissue, they were taking photos, then they put the brain in a fancy box. They are going back later with an entire team.”

“What did they see?”

“Tons of brain damage. Scarring. Again, evidence of radiation treatment, but not normal for a tumor. All over. Like ALL over. Doc said it couldn’t have been just cancer treatment. And the guy still had a port. You know, those things they install in your chest with a tube going up into your jugular? They use it to give drugs to cancer patients.
