Chapter 25
MOM CAME over around noon. She wore blue jeans and a T-shirt and had her hair pulled back in a ponytail. She planned to drive to campus, but I told her that I was usually going to ride the bus to school, so she wanted to take the bus too. She was really excited, and I couldnât help but tease her.
âOh, this brings back so many memories! Tor, youâre gonna love college. This is so much fun!â
âMom, calm down,â I said quietly, glancing around. No one was looking at us, but I felt self-conscious. Mom always was kind of a spaz when she got excited, but it was also why we had so much fun together.
The orientation was boring and Mom and I skipped out of the campus tour. We sat outside and watched people and talked. I scheduled my classes, and we went to the bookstore and got my books. I was surprised by how much the books cost and fortunate that Mom put the bill on her credit card. We got home a little after four and we sat and talked, waiting for Wesley to come home.
âYou should join some clubs too. Thatâs a great way to make friends. Iâm sure they have a history club or something. Itâll be good, too, because you can talk to others and see if you wanna major in education or if you wanna do straight history. I was in a nursing club at school and also the anthro club. Oh! Maybe you could join the newspaper too. I worked at the paper and it was so much fun!â
âYou wish you were still in college, donât you?â I asked, after listening to Momâs suggestions. She was outgoing and popular; she liked to be involved in everything.
âMaybe, a little bit,â she agreed. âCollege was just so much fun! Your dad and I went to the same school and he was on the newspaper too. I had the time of my life then, so itâs all happy memories for me. And now my little boy is all grown up and going off to college! I canât help but be excited for you.â
I laughed and Mom patted my head. It was getting close to six and Wesley would be coming home soon. I stood up and Mom followed me to the kitchen, where I took the salmon fillets and fresh broccoli from the refrigerator. Mom kept talking as I pulled out a box of rice from the pantry and measured two cups into a saucepan.
âOh baby, you donât know how much Iâve missed your cooking,â Mom said, watching as I cut up the broccoli. âWell, you too. I guess Iâve missed you too,â she corrected with a laugh. âWes doesnât know how good he has it⦠eating like a king every day!â
âYeah, he actually does. And he appreciates it,â I teased, giving Mom a broccoli stalk to nibble on.
âOh yeah, I was thinking, you should join theâ¦. What do they call it? Itâs letters, but⦠um, I donât know, itâs like a gay club or something.
