Kisatchie Forest

Isabella kissed her mother and father in a tearful goodbye.

“Y’all make sure to let me know as soon as the date is set for the wedding,” said Nancy. “I’ll email over some pictures of fabric and flower samples.”

“Don’t you worry about the costs,” William began, “let’s just try and keep things reasonable...”

“I can handle the money side of things,” I said. Jean-Luc had called early to let me know the pack’s finances had taken an abrupt upswing. With funds from Larissa’s and other packs once more flowing into the Alpha Council’s coffers, almost nothing was out of reach.

“Did you say something?” William asked with a stern look. “I hope it wasn’t anything as insulting as suggesting I can’t afford to pay for my own daughter’s wedding.”

“No—of course not,” I replied.

“Good, then it’s settled,” William nodded. I could tell this was a point of pride for him. “The country club might be a good venue.”

“Daddy!” Isabella put her hands on her hips.

William raised his hands defensively. “Or not. Your choice, of course.”

I hugged Nancy and gave William a firm handshake before we got back in the rental car and drove back to the airport. It had been a perplexing visit, but at least I had secured Isabella’s father’s blessing for the marriage—whenever that might be. With that daunting task accomplished, my thoughts returned to pack business.

We landed in Alexandria International Airport and then transferred to a smaller, two-engine plane. From there it was a short flight over tall pine trees. We touched down on the Miller Landing Strip in the heart of the Kisatchie National Forest. The Kisatchie Forest was over six-hundred-thousand acres. We were heading into the undeveloped and roadless areas of Saline Bayou and Cunningham Brake. That is where Zander’s pack territory began. Nearly my entire pack was there to greet us as we deplaned, along with the strongest fighters from Larissa’s pack.

Marcel strode forward to take our bags. “Ça fait longtemps, dis donc.”

“Quoi de neuf?” I returned his casual greeting.

Solene, the Lupări, looked on impassively while stroking a rifle. That would have been unsettling enough, but this was no ordinary rifle. It had an M203 single-shot, 40mm under-barrel grenade launcher attached to it. Remembering our last conversation, I did not doubt that the grenade was filled with a new type of silver cyanide she had been developing—deadly to me or any of my kind.

“Took ou long eno’,” Larissa spat. “Are we gonna do som’ killin’ o’ not?”

“Only what is needed,” I said grimly. “If Zander can be brought down, perhaps his pack will come to heel. Jean-Luc, report.”

“We haven’t yet encountered any of Zander’s patrols,” Jean-Luc began, “though I am certain they know we are here.”

I looked around at those gathered. “How many fighters do we have?”

“With the addition of Larissa’s men,” he nodded respectfully towards the intimidating figure, “we are nearly one-hundred-and-fifty strong.”

“Will it be enough?” I asked.

Cane stepped forward. “Zander is said to have the largest pack in the world. “At last count, they were over three-hundred strong—giving us two-to-one odds.
