CHAPTER 17

Having regained the sanctuary of his bedroom to hastily don fresh clothing with dignity intact, Ethan peered warily around the corner seconds later to find both vampire sisters conversing in hushed excitement over discoveries revealed during his unwilling magical striptease.

Raking both hands self-consciously through still damp hair, Ethan stepped forth clearing his throat pointedly until two lovely visages glanced up in tandem, keen interest brewing ominously in their dual amethyst gazes.

"Ahem, sorry about earlier..." Ethan mumbled, joining them awkwardly on the sofa while noting relieved that no obvious throat examinations seemed imminent this round. "So let's just talk this out? Feels like stuff is happening way too fast lately even for veterans of dimensional tears!" His weak chuckle tried injecting casual humor.

Exchanging a layered glance he couldn't decipher, Aurelia shifted nearer scrutinizing Ethan intently. "Indeed beloved guardian. Recount the sequence of alarming changes thus far from your view."

Her clinical tone still gently realized his ongoing turmoil. Beside her, Seraphina leaned forward with a patented hungry focus that Ethan realized now disguised her own worry for his stability. Taking strength from their stalwart support even through uncertainty stirred by his presence, Ethan slowly narrated reactive episodes.

"Well, back at the club initially all seemed chill..." Eyes closing, he tracked memories carefully step by step. "Those punks outside turned nasty toward us but when one guy got really insulting and grabby..." Ethan's fists clenched reflexively recalling the humiliation. "It's almost dreamlike looking back but I swear this hazy rage just overtook all senses."

He glanced up hesitantly meeting the sisters' silent encouragement to proceed. "Next thing I know, me and the jackass leader are trading serious punches until he manages this brutal uppercut." Brief phantom pain twinged Ethan's jaw in empathy. "But that's where stuff gets freaky! I'm bleeding and should be reeling, only somehow I stagger up with all of them looking scared I'll sprout devil horns suddenly!"

Ethan shook his head ruefully as flashes of the thugs fleeing his unhinged snarling panic-clear now. "And that 'fight or flight' instinct apparently unlocked more changes too judging by the muscles and other anatomy shifts straight after...” Trailing off pointedly, his cheeks pinked anew recalling Seraphina's sneak peek debacle.

“Any theories what the heck my genes think they're brewing over there?" Ethan joked weakly, waving toward the exaggerated fitness contours barely hidden by his loose tee. Surely logic prevailed somewhere for these arcane chaos?

Aurelia tapped one nail pensively against her lips . "The trigger does appear your righteous fury defending us from vulgar threats..." Eyes narrowing in thought she added delicately "Almost as though primal antiquity instincts detected a vulnerable mate to safeguard from peril.” Beside Ethan, Seraphina made a subtle sound low in her throat at the term but said nothing.

Oblivious, her twin mused on. “Perchance you do indeed harbor blood magic responding thus when great passions or duress demand...?”

Ethan coughed awkwardly as suggestions hung pointedly. “Huh, dinosaur genes waking up since hanging with immortal witches...that would add up I guess.” He forced an uneasy chuckle.
