CHAPTER 9

“What do you think you’re doing?” Jane pushed her away, noting that Renata was white-faced, her dark eyes huge, as if the kiss had shocked her, too.

Jane’s metaphorical toes slowly uncurled but her heart still pounded, and her ears burned with the hot flash that had swallowed her body whole.

“What exactly do you think you’re doing?” she repeated. Then, suddenly aware they were standing in her hallway in full view of the street, said, “For heaven’s sake, close the door.”

Renata reached blindly behind her, her gaze not leaving Jane’s face, and fumbled the door shut.

“What do you think you are do—” Jane began again.

“Something I should have done the moment we met in that rainstorm. Something I should have done all those years ago. I should have hunted you down and found you, and made everything right.”

“What?” Jane sputtered. Actually sputtered. “Are you mad? You called me a bitch the moment you clapped eyes on me. You outed me to my friends. You have done nothing but spit venom from the moment you arrived. You’re insane.”

Renata reached for her. “Could be. Insanity is the only explanation I have as to why I still care so much about you. This week has been an epiphany. I hated you so much for abandoning me but now I realise it’s representative of how deep my original feelings went.”

“And I’ve just told you why I did it. You can be angry, but at least be responsible, too.” She avoided Renata’s touch.

“I understand that now. I really do. I get it. But I was young and stupid. We were both young and stupid, for God’s sake. But I loved you like crazy. I was mad for you and so angry when you left. I couldn’t understand why and I wanted to…and I’ve been chasing that feeling ever since, when I should have been chasing you.”

Loved her like crazy? “Don’t you dare chase me. I live here, and do so very happily without you. Why can’t you just walk away and forget? People our age don’t behave like this. Like besotted teenagers.”

Renata started to reach for her again then stopped. “Yes, we did fall in love as besotted teenagers,” she said. “And people our age can do whatever we want. We can afford to. We can afford to be foolish in a way young people can’t.”

“What are you talking about?” This conversation was scaring the hell out of her.

“There’s a reason we ended up back in this valley after all these years, Jane. I think we were supposed to meet again, talk, and fall in love all over.”

“Oh, my God. You really are insane. Are you listening to yourself—”

Renata pulled her into another kiss and they fell against the wall where the coats and hats hung and sent them spilling to the floor. Jane’s knees gave out and she very nearly took them both down with the garments, but the wall kept her upright even as her knees and mouth and hands betrayed her. She clung to Renata, her hands bunched in the back of her blouse.
