Teo pushed open the door to the holding centre and motioned to the guard at the desk. He must be new, as Teo didnât recognize him. âDraw up the paperwork for the prisonerâs release. Charges are dropped. Heâs free to go.â
The guard hesitated.
âDo it now.â Teo bit out the words. Why did everyone doubt him?
The man pulled a paper from a file. Teo pointed to Ethan, who stood at the bars of his cell.
âYouâre free to go as soon as the paperwork is done. Thereâs no evidence to hold you, so Iâm dropping the charges. Maybe Iâm nuts, but I donât believe you meant to kill me. Maybe knock my lights out.â One corner of his lips lifted. He could respect that. âBut if you ever try something like this again, Moss, I will eat you alive.â
Ethanâs Adamâs apple bobbed in this throat.
âThereâs one thing I need from you as a show of goodwill. If you hear about anything strange in the forest, come to me. Donât go to anyone else.â
He nodded, his eyes never leaving Teo.
Teo turned and left the holding centre, the knot in his stomach loosening. He rolled his shoulders as he strolled to his office. Seth sat on the bench in the hallway outside it.
Teo jabbed his key in the lock. âWhat are you doing here?â
âI wanted to check on you. You seem out of sorts.â
âIâm fine.â Now that heâd made a decision about the prisoner.
âWhat do you mean?â
âI freed Ethan.â
Seth jumped up. âYou did what?â
âI let him go. We had nothing on him other than a concealed weapon.â Teo shoved open his office door.
Seth blew out a breath. âYouâre digging your own grave.â
âNo, Iâm not. Heâs not an assassin. Heâd shoot himself in his foot before heâd hit a target.â Teo rolled his eyes. âBesides, he helped us with the Lupine fluâwhy would he come after me now?â
âI donât know. Because of Jenna?â
Teo shook his head. âHe risks execution for unrequited love? No way.â
âMother is going to freak.â
He slapped Seth on the shoulder. âIâll handle Mother. Besides, Iâm the king. Everyone seems to forget that.â
His brother eyed him warily. âThen maybe you should start acting like it.â
A roar rushed through his ears, and he grabbed Seth by the lapels of his jacket and shoved him hard against the wall. He growled, âMaybe you better start remembering it.â After pushing him into the wall once more, Teo snarled, then let go. Seth stumbled before regaining his footing, his eyes wide. Teoâs stomach churned. Heâd never turned on his brother before. He brushed past Seth, into his office, slamming the door behind him.
Teo leaned against the door, clenching his trembling fists. Get control of yourself. The room shifted, and Teo staggered to the desk, slumping in his chair. He rubbed his temples as pain shot through his eyes. Nausea rolled through him, and he clamped his mouth shut, dragging breath in through his nostrils.
The door to his office swung open. He lifted his head, expecting Seth, but his mother stood before him.
