Teo pushed open the door to the holding centre and motioned to the guard at the desk. He must be new, as Teo didn’t recognize him. “Draw up the paperwork for the prisoner’s release. Charges are dropped. He’s free to go.”

The guard hesitated.

“Do it now.” Teo bit out the words. Why did everyone doubt him?

The man pulled a paper from a file. Teo pointed to Ethan, who stood at the bars of his cell.

“You’re free to go as soon as the paperwork is done. There’s no evidence to hold you, so I’m dropping the charges. Maybe I’m nuts, but I don’t believe you meant to kill me. Maybe knock my lights out.” One corner of his lips lifted. He could respect that. “But if you ever try something like this again, Moss, I will eat you alive.”

Ethan’s Adam’s apple bobbed in this throat.

“There’s one thing I need from you as a show of goodwill. If you hear about anything strange in the forest, come to me. Don’t go to anyone else.”

He nodded, his eyes never leaving Teo.

Teo turned and left the holding centre, the knot in his stomach loosening. He rolled his shoulders as he strolled to his office. Seth sat on the bench in the hallway outside it.

Teo jabbed his key in the lock. “What are you doing here?”

“I wanted to check on you. You seem out of sorts.”

“I’m fine.” Now that he’d made a decision about the prisoner.

“What do you mean?”

“I freed Ethan.”

Seth jumped up. “You did what?”

“I let him go. We had nothing on him other than a concealed weapon.” Teo shoved open his office door.

Seth blew out a breath. “You’re digging your own grave.”

“No, I’m not. He’s not an assassin. He’d shoot himself in his foot before he’d hit a target.” Teo rolled his eyes. “Besides, he helped us with the Lupine flu—why would he come after me now?”

“I don’t know. Because of Jenna?”

Teo shook his head. “He risks execution for unrequited love? No way.”

“Mother is going to freak.”

He slapped Seth on the shoulder. “I’ll handle Mother. Besides, I’m the king. Everyone seems to forget that.”

His brother eyed him warily. “Then maybe you should start acting like it.”

A roar rushed through his ears, and he grabbed Seth by the lapels of his jacket and shoved him hard against the wall. He growled, “Maybe you better start remembering it.” After pushing him into the wall once more, Teo snarled, then let go. Seth stumbled before regaining his footing, his eyes wide. Teo’s stomach churned. He’d never turned on his brother before. He brushed past Seth, into his office, slamming the door behind him.

Teo leaned against the door, clenching his trembling fists. Get control of yourself. The room shifted, and Teo staggered to the desk, slumping in his chair. He rubbed his temples as pain shot through his eyes. Nausea rolled through him, and he clamped his mouth shut, dragging breath in through his nostrils.

The door to his office swung open. He lifted his head, expecting Seth, but his mother stood before him.
