16 SIXTEEN

ELIOT WAS quiet for the drive back to Mount Clemens. He was working things out in his mind.

“Do you think he was dirty?” I asked once we hit the exit to North River Road. We would have to return to his shop long enough for me to collect my car.

“I think the odds are good,” he replied after a moment. “I don’t want to jump to that conclusion because it seems unfair if he died in the line of duty, but ... it doesn’t make a lot of sense for him not to be dirty at this point.”

“And Jake is covering it up,” I mused.

“Jake is ... doing what he has to do to protect himself and his department. He’s not purposely working against you.”

“I know I shouldn’t take it personally ... .”

“You shouldn’t,” he insisted.

“I still hate it when he hides information from me.”

“You know why he does it.”

“To drive me crazy.”

“Because it’s his job.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah.” I finished the rest of the ride in silence and waited until we were in front of his shop to speak again. “I have to write a piece on the news conference and talk to Fish. It shouldn’t take long.”

Eliot’s smirk was sly. “It’s very wifely of you to give me an update like that.”

I tried to jab a finger in his face but I was wearing a mitten, so all he got was a face full of crocheted shark. “Don’t push me.”

He caught my wrist and leaned in for a kiss. “I will push you later ... maybe over dinner. How would you feel about eating something that’s not covered in chili and onions?”

That didn’t sound nearly as good as he probably thought it did. “I don’t want to get dressed up.”

“I was thinking the Thai place. You love that weird dish with the mushrooms and tomatoes.”

“I do, but the wife mentioned there’s going to be a candlelight vigil tonight in front of the courthouse for Perry.”

Eliot straightened and looked around. “I hadn’t heard anything about that.”

“Emma said it’ll be full of cops and politicians. She’s excited about that because she doesn’t realize that most of them are doing it for a photo op. I’m curious enough about who will be there that I kind of want to drop in.”

“That’s quite the day for you, longer than a normal shift,” he noted. “Will you be asking Fish for comp time to make up for it?”

Oh, geez, he just wasn’t going to let it go. “Probably not, but I will stop at Human Resources long enough to ask for an accounting of the outstanding days I have so we can plan another trip. How does that sound?”

“Like more compromise.” He leaned in and gave me a playful kiss, lightly biting my bottom lip before pulling back. “You’re really getting the hang of this compromise thing. I can’t tell you how glad I am about that.”

That made one of us. “I kind of liked it when I did whatever I wanted and answered to no one.
