Chapter 19

"Mom, could you and Dad help…?"

"Blasin, honey, you don't even need to ask. Your dad and I are with you. Your dad's waiting in the living room. I've already got two legal pads and pens from your dad's office. Let's all sit down and get goin' on this."

It was times like this that Blasin was so thankful for her family. She knew they would do anything for her. Now, she just needed to get her mind in gear.

"Ok, Dad, you first. I need you to pull that old fruit stand cart out of the garage," she started. "Who knew when you brought that old thing home from our vacation last year that it would be the center piece for a wedding reception," she spoke with a smile of remembrance. "The color is already perfect, white with all the weather distressing. Take the wheels off that it has on it now and put those great big wooden ones that are propped up against the back garage wall."

"There are only three of those wheels,” her father informed her. “Do you want me to make some architectural design changes to the front, so that it only needs three?"

"Exactly! Also… could you quickly make some kind of… I don't even know what to call it… almost like a miniature set of bleachers that would fill up the inside of the cart? I'll need at least six layers. I know that will make it stand pretty high, but I need that height for all the miniature cakes that we’ll need to place on it. Make each layer high enough to support twenty-five three-inch by two-inch pieces of cake, a total of one hundred and fifty pieces. Is that right?

"Oh… and I don't care if the bleachers face lengthwise or width-wise. Makes no difference."

She did a quick calculation in her head. Yeah, six times twenty-five was one hundred and fifty. But, she better make one more layer for an extra twenty-five cakes, just in case.

"Better make the bleacher thing seven levels high. I'll need one hundred and seventy-five individual servings, twenty-five on each level, just in case."

Her ever-ready-to-help dad responded with, "Anything else, or shall I go outside and get started?"

"Could you get Mr. Stadler and his son from next door to commit to the rest of the afternoon as two 'gofers?'" I don't know what help you might need, or me either in getting that thing to The Gala Experience. Tell them we'll pay them seventy-five dollars apiece for their time for the rest of the day. Do you think they'll go for that?"

"I think they'll more than go for it. I'm outa here." And within three minutes, she heard her dad yelling over the fence to Mr. Stadler and his teenage son, Greg. She couldn't hear everything that was said other than, "Count us in!" That was from the senior Stadler. Greg, however, followed it with, "Cool!"

*****

"Mom, I'm gonna need to jump right into management mode with this. And, I'm really going to need to lean heavily on you.
