When I got home, the house let me in right away, thankfully. Probably because it could sense my frazzled feelings. Not to mention I was exhausted. Everyone else seemed to be in bed already. After closing my bedroom door, I flipped on the light. Pearl was situated on my pillow, the queen of Sheba.
âGet off my bed,â I hissed quietly, opening my door and motioning for her to leave.
She meowed once, which was beyond unusual. Pearl wasnât a vocal cat. She blinked.
âYou need to talk to me,â I said, each syllable oozing with frustration. âWell, Iâm sorry. I canât just shift into my cat all willy-nilly. I wish I could, but I canât.â I went over to the bed and sat. I just needed some sleep.
Pearl stood and stretched. Then walked to the other end of my bed and noticed something that looked like a book resting on top of my afghan. Pearl pawed at the leather cover until the book opened, revealing that it wasnât a book at all but a journal. I knew because of the handwriting. She meowed again. Then she pawed at some more pages until she found what she was looking for and sat down.
I watched, mesmerized, until it dawned on me what journal I was looking at. âHoly fluffing fluff balls. It canât be.â I donât even know why I thought about Katieâs diary. Whether it was because Iâd spoken to Piper earlier that day or what. But I tugged off my boots, scooted to the middle of the bed, and crossed my legs. My heart was beating so fast I thought it might come right out of my chest. With shaking hands, I picked up the journal, careful not to rip the pages. Turned it so that it was right side up and studied it. Put my finger between the two pages and flipped to the first. In swirly handwriting that I was sure was Katieâs were the words: This Journal Belongs to Katie Broomstick.
At the revelation, I glanced at Pearl. âHow did this get here?â Never before that moment had I wanted to shift into my cat so badly. She was right. We needed to have a conversation. But my cat refused to make an appearance. Probably still in hiding after the danger Iâd been in.
âIâm sorry,â I said to Pearl.
In response, she yawned and returned to my pillow, where she promptly went to sleep.
No longer tired, I carefully found the spot Pearl had gone to. The pages shouldâve been smeared or disintegrated. The journal had fallen into the ocean along with Pippy. I knew it. Sure, I hadnât seen the journal splash into the water below. Iâd been too preoccupied with keeping myself alive. And for that matter, I hadnât seen Pippy hit the water either. Neither the journal nor her body had been found, either.
âIs it possible?â I glanced over my shoulder at Pearl, but she was still asleep.
Adjusting myself to be more comfortable, I wrapped the blanket from the end of my bed around my shoulders.
