The week was filled with avoidances, Jordan avoiding Danielle, Danielle avoiding the fact that she was missing her contact with Jordan. When they did meet, it was all about business. From the outside looking in, nothing had changed, but they both knew it had, and Danielle knew it was her responsibility. Even throwing all her energy into work, or exercise or Scott or Adam, or anything, didn’t help. But it did give her no time to ask herself why losing a friend she’d only known a few weeks was proving so painful.

Jordan saw Helen a couple of times during the week and she stayed both times. They celebrated Helen’s junior partnership at work and they enjoyed a lot of inventive and heated sex. But nothing eased the ache or the overwhelming sadness that remained long after Helen fell asleep.
