Chapter Twelve—Irene

Dr. Wallace placed Brynn back into the capsule, as he liked to call it. He wanted more scans; the purpose was to activate her pineal gland. It was beyond me why he needed to do this again.

“Irene,” Brynn whispered, “Do I have to do this again?” The dark circles under her eyes and the desperation in her voice made me want to grab her and run. I couldn’t do it. Not yet. But I had every intention of getting her out of her. Dr. Wallace was pushing her too far. He was limiting her sleep, exposing her to brighter and brighter lights with no results.

“I’m afraid so,” I answered brushing her hair out of her face. “It will only be a minute and then I’ll get you your favorite ice cream. Deal?” I tried to sound positive, but I was anything but. Dr. Wallace was hiding more and more in the shadows. Not willing to keep me in the circle with him and Veronica.

“Okay,” Brynn laid back in the machine. She sounded so defeated.

“Is she ready?” the doctor called over the speaker.

I nodded my head, “Yes.”

“Brynn, just relax,” Dr. Wallace instructed. “this will only take a few minutes and then you’ll be done. Just like last time. How could anyone relax with the whirring and the closed quarters? Brynn had been so brave lately. I watched Brynn as she lay, still and quiet. Not moving a muscle. I admired her so much.

“Dr. Wallace, what other tests will we be running?” I inquired as I joined him in the booth.

Without looking away from the machine, “I have a special test that I’d like to do with Brynn after this. It’s a new one.”

“What kind of new test?” I was intrigued. There had been so many evaluations done to Brynn. How could there possibly be a new test?

“There’s a little room here at Windham Hall that I feel will help us monitor Brynn’s other senses a little better. It’s isolated and will help drown out any outside noises or disturbances.” Dr. Wallace stopped speaking about the test, “Brynn, we are almost finished. You’re doing great, young lady.”

“Her other senses?” I asked, confused. Veronica sniffed at my question, but she didn’t offer an explanation. She scribbled on her clipboard.

“Hearing, smelling, taste and feeling.” He replied, his attention still firmly placed in the next room with Brynn.

“I’ve never seen this room. It’s on the first floor?”

“Please no more questions. Dr. Wallace turned his gaze towards me, “There are reports that when you lose one of your five senses your other senses are heightened. Something like a metamorphosis of sorts. I believe that Brynn is a great candidate to test that theory inside the Body Box. It’s like the tank but instead of floating, she will be in a seated position.”

I didn’t know what to say to that.

“Brynn can hear things you can’t, correct?” he asked me. “She mentioned hearing children. You didn’t believe her?” Dr. Wallace asked curiously, “Why not?”

“Because as far as I know there are no other children here.
