Keith and Selena left the table a few minutes later, leaving a stunned Ripper and a whining Maylee behind. The others at the table seemed equally shocked by the fact they were going after Solana so soon, but once this whole mess with The Empress was dealt with, he didn’t want to waste any time. Three weeks was more than enough to get their act together, raise a few more levels, and finish preparations on all the potions, scrolls, and traps they’d been acquiring.

“Man, I blew it, didn’t I?” he heard Maylee’s voice drift as he walked away.

Ripper’s voice came next, and though it was a bit quieter, Keith could still hear him.

“I don’t think you should have said anything when you were drunk. Telling someone you like them is hard at the best of times.”

“Oh, poo to you,” Maylee said, throwing her mug on the ground.

Then she started crying.

“If you’d been with me and the boys, you’d have been the envy of us all,” Tac sighed as Keith made his way to the smithy. “The way to pick up girls is an artform.”

“I’ve never tried to do anything of the sort,” Keith replied.

“Exactly,” Tac exclaimed. “That’s what makes it an art!”

Winding his way through the crowd, he soon found the entrance to the smithy, where Farah was still up, apparently burning the midnight oil by herself.

“Hey,” he said, raising a hand in greeting as he entered.

Farah blinked owlishly at him, slowly placing her hammer down and rubbing her eyes.

“Keith. What a surprise to see you,” she said, covering a yawn.

Then Selena walked in, and Farah’s eyes bulged. She was over the counter in an instant, so quickly that Keith wondered if she’d somehow been hiding a teleportation skill.

“Look at you!” the smith exclaimed, staring at Selena from an inch away. “Look at those lines, the curves, and joints. You’re perfect!”

“Uh, thanks,” Selena said, a smile starting to stretch her lips.

She’d been taken off guard by the woman’s enthusiasm, but compliments always worked wonders on her.

“Would you mind holding your arm out for me?” Farah asked.

Selena did, and the smith bent forward, running her fingers along the forearm and muttering to herself.

“The joints are perfectly set, and the inlay would definitely allow for transformations. Big ones, too. Oh! Look at the integration of the rings on the fingers. So perfect!”

She lifted Selena’s arm, examining every inch as though she were a critic looking at a piece of art. He imagined she appreciated the work more than most, having worked alongside Hunk in Lihng Capitol and being a Grandmaster smith herself.

Selena, for her part, just stood there, smiling dumbly as she watched the woman run her hands over her, moving from her arm to her chest, then stomach. It got to the point where most people would start to feel uncomfortable at all the touching, but Keith stood there with crossed arms, patiently waiting for the woman to finish.

They were on a bit of a clock, so when it looked like she would take longer than they had, he cleared his throat to get her attention.
