The rooms are smaller in Segregation.

White paint over bricks.

It’s morning.

The blanket is warm over my body.

‘Breakfast,’ the screw says.

He’s tall and kitted up.

My room door opens.

Screw hands me buttered toast on a paper plate.

‘How about some bacon and eggs?’ I ask.

He scoffs, locks the door when he leaves.

I think I have been in here two days now, two wake-ups.

The toast is moist and soft.

Not even toasted to an acceptable amount of toasty-ness.

The butter is thick.

They lobbed it all on without even smoothing it out.

It wouldn’t have killed them to dab on some Vegemite.

I stay in my room because that’s all I can do.

The white walls are decorated in graffiti scratched into the paint.

The tags of boys I won’t ever know.

Their nicknames, I guess.

Jezzy. ANto. Clixy.

My bed isn’t even comfy.

The mattress is thin.

I can feel the springs of the bed right through it.
