Edward Bell

Up-and-coming artist Edward Bell was holding his first solo exhibition in London when the gallery owner pointed out a nondescript man in the corner who wanted to talk about the artwork. At first glance, Bell was none too impressed. The man was wearing an insipid yellow, short-sleeved shirt, bright red trousers and shades. “I thought it was strange to be wearing dark glasses in a gallery if you wanted to see paintings,” recalled Bell. “I thought he must be an American tourist.”

Bell politely went over but paid scant attention until the man started to talk intelligently about the paintings. “Then it dawned on me: Jesus Christ, it’s David Bowie!”

Bowie asked Bell to design the cover for Scary Monsters and within the week, according to Bell writing in Unmade Up: Recollections of a Friendship with David Bowie, the project was completed. Bowie would continue to wear the shades when the pair went off drinking together in dingy pubs off London’s Earl’s Court Road, with no one ever recognizing the person underneath.
