Chapter 6

Cupid waited for Val to enter her apartment building before he teleported to Olympus. He didn't even think that he was out in the open for all humans to see. He was too angry to think at all. When he got to the reflecting pool he could see his quiver and arrows sitting on the edge of the white marble surface. He ran full force into Hercules trying to knock him down, but it felt like he’d hit a brick wall. Hercules didn't budge an inch. Cupid punched him over and over while Hercules just stood there.

The corner of Hercules' mouth tipped up as he arched a brow at Cupid. “Are you quite done?”

“No! Why did you do that? Why did you shoot Val with that arrow?!”

“You know you can't hurt me so just stop it. And for your information, it wasn’t me.”

Cupid was so blind with rage that he didn’t see Somnus standing there with the bow still in his hand. He grabbed Somnus by the shirt and shook him. “You. You did it? Why?”

“You needed it.”

“You fucking asshole! Do you have any idea what you've done? Why would I need that?”

“You need love in your life, there is no way you can let this slide now. You have to be with her, you have no choice.”

Cupid shook Somnus again. “Who made you an authority on my life? Now she thinks she’s in love with me.”

“And now you can have her love.”

Cupid let go of his friend and turned around. “I don’t want to be with her if her love for me isn’t real.”

“You didn’t want to be with her at all. I simply helped by allowing you to see what it would feel like to have someone say they love you. You can’t abandon her now.”

“Well, that’s where you’re wrong. Instead of there being one broken heart, now there will be two.” Cupid walked away from them both.

“Cue, wait!” Somnus yelled after him. "We need to talk about this."

Cupid started on his way home. He could have teleported, but he wanted to walk and get rid of some of the anger and frustration that had now taken over him. He needed to try and wrap his head around why his best friend would want to hurt him more than he already was. Then drag an unsuspecting innocent woman into the mix as well. Somnus should have known better. For the first time in his life Cupid felt sick to his stomach. At least that's what he thought it was. Gods never got sick, but his stomach muscles were wrenching in all directions from the pain he was feeling.

Maybe it was love. Maybe this is where the humans got the term 'love hurts' from. The problem was he now had a woman who thought she loved him. To him, there was no greater pain than being in love with someone who truly didn’t love him back. After they’d made love he actually thought for a fraction of a second that he could be happy with her.
