Chapter 24

Grant’s Crossing - present day

Derek leaned back in his seat. “Joey was disappointed he lost the bet.”

Logan furrowed his brow. “The bet?”

“Yeah!” Back from giving her daughter a bath, Lainee shimmied in excitement as she returned to her seat at the table. “What bet?”

Abe cleared his throat, keeping his amusement in check.

Derek gave his dad a nervous laugh and shook his head. “Joey, uh, was disappointed he’d only gotten to second base.”

Logan guffawed. “That’s all he admitted to?”

“With his prom date, yeah.”

“Hell. We made it past second base.”

Derek snorted. “I know.”

“You do? I mean…” Logan quickly schooled his expression and cleared his throat. He glanced up at Drew, who pressed his lips together to suppress his laughter. “Well… we did.” His smile was short-lived. “It was pretty great.”

“He still had to buy me pizza.”

Lainee knitted her brow. “Pizza?”

“Yeah.” Derek exhaled. “Whoever went the farthest, the other would buy him pizza.

“Kaitlyn?” Logan asked.

“Uh-huh.”

“Who then dumped you in your first deployment,” Tank said, his voice dripped with contempt.

“I remember hearing about that. I’m sorry, D.”

Tank agreed with Kiro. “Yeah. That was pretty cold, no offense.”

“It’s all good.” Derek waved him off. After a few seconds, his lip curled up on one side. “At least I was stationed on a base with women when it happened.”

The room broke out in laughter.

“Joey and I did our best to distract you.”

“May not have admitted it then, but I appreciated what you both did. But back to prom night….”

Tank opened his mouth to speak but decided against it.

“What about you, Tank? Celi?” Derek looked at Tank and Araceli, who blushed.

Tank cleared his throat. “I took her straight home and gave her a chaste kiss goodnight.” He proceeded to nonchalantly brush off a piece of nonexistent lint from his shoulder.

Araceli’s face turned a brighter shade of red.

Derek grinned. “Uh-huh. Sure.”

Logan broke in. “At least you weren’t interrupted in the middle of anything.”

Derek extended his arms. “I thought you said Drew came by after.”

Logan folded his arms in front of his chest and let a derisive laugh escape. “Oh, he did. But I’m not talking about Drew.”

“What?”

Logan cocked a brow and raised his hand to make his point. “I’m talking about you. Just before July 4th. When you interrupted a perfectly nice evening. As perfectly nice as two almost nineteen-year olds could have, anyway.”
