The sound of the boat engines cut through the peace of the morning. Cora watched as they trawled the coastline, searching the waters as a lone horse stood shivering on the beach. She shuddered as she gazed at the darkness of the ocean, knowing what lurked beneath the waves. Triton’s power was growing. And she knew she had to stop him. It wasn’t just about trying to prove herself anymore. It was about saving the entire island.

She pulled her coat from the rack, and jumped as her father’s voice cut through the silence of the house.

“You’re more on edge than usual.” He glanced at her suspiciously from his armchair. “The way you keep watching the ocean, it’s as if you expect the sea god himself to appear.”

Cora laughed nervously and ran a hand through her hair. If only her father knew just how accurate he was.

“Any news from Dougie?”

“No Pa. I’m sure he’s fine, though.”

Truthfully, he was better than fine. He’d sent Cora a letter just two days ago saying as much. He was thriving on the mainland, and she knew he would never return.

“He’ll be back in time for the races, I’m sure. Things are looking up for us. I can feel it.” Her father smiled and placed his hand on hers affectionately. “I’ve been hard on you, Cora, but it’s because I know what the sea is capable of. There are secrets in that ocean you wouldn’t believe. And I couldn’t bear to lose you.”

Cora shifted awkwardly. She hated keeping things from her father. But between making deals with a sea god, the return of an ancient evil, and entering the Tidal Cup to reclaim their family’s deed, she knew that even if she told her father the truth, she wouldn’t know where to begin.

“I’m not going anywhere, Pa. Now rest up.”

He grumbled, but remained in the armchair. “The ocean never rests, and it won’t be long until I’m back on the fishing boats.”

“Well, don’t rush back. For now, you need to stay here and get plenty of rest.” Cora glanced at the clock, and pecked her father on his forehead. “I’m late, again. See you later, Pa.”

She ran out of the house and saddled up Meg, before they sped to the beach and toward the lighthouse. As they rode, the tides shifted in the distance, exposing more of the racetrack that connected the archipelago of islands. In just a few days, the riders would assemble before the starting line, and the Tidal Cup would begin.

Cora tuned and watched McGulligan, who raced his stallion at an impossible speed across the beach. She knew that stopping Triton wouldn’t be enough. She had to ensure McGulligan couldn’t destroy the ocean any further than he had already. And she vowed she would do everything in her power to beat him.

She led Meg along the rocky path across the ocean, and smiled as she spotted Kai in the waters. He ascended from the depths of the kingdom beneath, before joining her in the surf, his body slick and wet.
