So you might feed them lightly, and as you do and they produce waste, it will help seed that filter and get it ready for spring a little bit more rapidly. But you can build your ponds in the fall and in the winter, and have them ready to mature in the spring, but you just don’t want to heavily load them with fish.

In fish culture, they’ll call it crash loading of a biological filter, and any filter can be overrun, even a mature filter. If you drastically increase your fish load on it, or drastically increase your feeding load on it, you can certainly outrun its ability to process that waste.
