Devon sent you a message.

“But it’s like you said…” Vincent drones as he puts his beer to his lips, his eyes on my phone, “Not every jewel needs to be a diamond to be of real value.”

I clutch my hand over my stomach to ease the queasy feeling. For the first time since I met Ross, I dread our date, knowing it’s the last time I will ever be close to him. The mere thought of never meeting him again carves bleeding marks into my chest.

The elevator announces my arrival, and I drag my feet down the secret passageway of Hotel Astra, keeping my gaze down.

It feels like I’m fighting fate. The dragonfly that looked like Crawly landing on his shoulder in the middle of winter. The number six showing up everywhere in my life. My perfect match…

“Evening, ma’am,” the chubby security guy in his black attire gruffs out when I approach him.

I reciprocate with a tight smile that doesn’t reach my eyes and stretch out my arm. He scans my bracelet. Next, I shove my bag at him so he can check the contents and pull my Glock from my waistband. He frowns at the gun as I cram it into the locker along with my phone, throwing me a wary glance. I keep my gaze averted when he swipes the metal detector wand down my body, barely able to stand still as he finishes his security procedure.

“Is everything alright, ma’am?” he asks in a cautious tone, and I jerk my gaze to him.

He’s never talked to me before other than mumbling the obligatory ‘evening.’ I guess my face gave away my agitation.

“Sure,” I mutter and shoulder past him into the bathroom.

Once there, I chance a glance at the clock. Two minutes to eight. That’s okay, I don’t need to dress up tonight anyway. No perfume, no brushing my hair, no shaving my legs. I need to make a statement—for Ross and for me.

The clock ticks eight, and I yank off my boots before I cut the lights with my bracelet, wiping it over the scanner. Soft music floats from the cozy room as the door slides inward, and I bite my lip when the lyrics from Aerosmith’s ‘I don’t want to miss a thing’ reaches my ears.

“Hello, dragonfly girl,” Ross croons, and I close my eyes to savor his tender words, branding them into my memory for all eternity. “Come, dance with me.”

I open my eyes again to see him stretching out a hand, biting my lip when I shuffle closer.

Please, don’t make this any harder than it has to be.

“I didn’t even know there was a CD player in here,” I say instead, and he chuckles, taking my hand when I’m within reach.

“More like a jukebox from the 1960s.” He nods to a rectangular machine with an arched top standing next to the fridge. “Their collection is horrible. This was the best song I could find.”

No, it’s the worst, I think when Steven Tyler comes to the part where he sings about sweet surrenders and moments to treasure.
