UNRELENTING RESEARCH AND TESTING. When Dr. Shawa (above) became horticulturist and area county extension agent for both Pacific and Grays Harbor Counties in 1965, he devoted his attention to pesticide and herbicide research in addition to cranberry fertility and color enhancement. By the time Dr. Patten arrived as associate horticulturist and extension agent in 1990, the station was well-established as a major contributor to the cranberry industry in Washington, Oregon, and beyond. Patten’s major contribution has been in the area of pest control and in research on environmentally specific and safe uses of insecticides and herbicides. In addition, his continuing field studies concerning the most suitable and reliable cranberry varieties have resulted in reciprocal relationships within the industry.
