Chapter 10

In my entire life, I’ve never had a day like the one I spent with Erik.

We parted just long enough for him to stash his weapons somewhere and wash the blood off his hands, with plans to meet again in the market not long after lunch. The sun hung lazily in the sky, arrayed in all its summer glory, and I was strolling along the merchants’ tables, close enough to the nearby harbor to catch the salted breeze from the sea.

In hindsight, I probably should have waited for him. But we hadn’t made a fixed place to find each other, and there was no telling how long he might be. Instead of lingering by the gate, I drifted from vendor to vendor, feasting my eyes on a hundred wonders, suddenly within reach.

Two silver coins...what could they buy me?

Despite Trina’s open offer, I had decided not to spend any more than that. It was a kind indulgence, and I’d been shocked by the sight of gold in our house, but there was no counting on the next year’s harvest, or the one after that, and a person needed to be frugal when they could.

That being said, it was still more coin that I had ever spent in one sitting—let alone on myself. I could scarcely wrap my head around it, and found myself paralyzed at every turn.

Did I want the scent, which I had spied again from a distance? Did I want a new wrap for the winter, or perhaps even a dress for the summer heat? There was a series of wild moments in which I resolved to buy myself a bow. I had never attempted archery, and saw no reason why I would suddenly excel at it now. In addition to the bow, I’d need the quiver and arrows. It would take more than just the two coins, but I’d been convinced by the merchant, it would pay for itself in time. It was perhaps a fortunate bit of timing that sent a worthier customer his way, because in the time it took him to offload an axe, I’d already forsaken the notion and slipped down the road.

The day was warm, and I couldn’t stop smiling. Everything seemed charming to me. The ships bobbing in the distant harbor, the stubborn donkey straining against its harness, the sight of two lovers, walking hand in hand. I stopped at a table of jewelry, running my eyes over the lot.

“Do you have something in mind?” the merchant asked me, smiling wide.

I shook my head contentedly. “Just looking.”

There were beads of rarest amber, iron armbands, and a hammered necklace of what must have been false-gold. There was no way he’d have kept it in the open, otherwise. Brooches, and pendants, and half a dozen tiny rings littered the fabric overlay; but my eyes caught on something smaller—a pair of earrings made from a stone I’d never seen before; such a shocking, vivid blue, it looked to have been drawn up straight from the sea.
