Later that day, Mary went back up to the library after training with Xavier. Being around him after their night on the gun range, Mary found that being around him felt different than the first time. She suddenly felt like she had to be perfect around him. One mistake and she would be completely embarrassed. She didn’t feel like that with Brad, though she still had some interest in him. But, it felt like her old life. With Xavier, she felt brand new. She felt stronger.
She really did.
Training with Xavier and in The Cave made her feel different. She was getting better and she felt more determined, even after firing the gun that night. She could feel her muscles getting more definition and she was even gaining abs. She would have never gotten this far in high school, but they pushed training more and more on everybody. It felt amazing.
However, Mary sometimes felt that she wasn’t allowed to enjoy the exercise and the gain she was building. She still had no idea where her brother was and she couldn’t find her father without clues. She was at a dead end before she even started. Spending time with Xavier cut into the time, too. She was here for one reason only and she had to focus on that.
She grabbed another book from the shelf and sat in her corner. She began flipping through the pages, going through the details and the dialogue between the characters. By the time she had finished the book, nearly three hours had passed. It was a small book she had chosen so she wouldn’t miss lunch or another training session. She glanced at a clock on the wall and noticed it was just about lunchtime.
She put the book back and traveled back down to the cafeteria. It was already starting to fill up, so she got in line and was served with a hamburger, macaroni and cheese, and applesauce. It reminded her of the school lunch, which wasn’t terrible. When she left the line, she looked around in search for Leah.
She was nowhere to be seen.
She found Brad sitting with a few other people and sat next to him. “Hey.”
Brad smiled at her. “Hey. How’s it going? You’re getting better.”
Mary smiled. “Thanks. Have you seen Leah?”
He shook his head and pursed his lips. “No. The last time I saw her was when you two were up on the track.”
She looked around again and saw the line was thinning and the cafeteria was filling up. There was still no sign of her and, even she was here, she would seek out Mary and Brad. They normally sat together either way.
Mary had an uneasy feeling in her stomach, but brushed it off. “She must have gotten sick or something. I’ll just find her later.”
“Is everything okay?” he asked her.
Mary looked at the others at the table and lowered her voice. “What were your thoughts on the assembly?”
Brad leaned toward her so they had more privacy. “It was kind of scary, but I don’t think we have anything to worry about.
