“Mags, didn’t Calista tell me you kinda have a thing going on with Marcus Sutton?” Thomas whispers in my ear, going for inconspicuous.

Thankfully, the couple we’re talking to are lost in their own conversation and start to move away.

“I don't know that I’d call it a thing, per se. Why?”

“I think we’re about to find out. The Sutton brothers are making a beeline for us. And the younger of the two isn’t looking all that thrilled. He looks like he wants to murder me.”

I scan the room until I find Marcus briskly making his way across the ballroom. He doesn't look happy, but he does look desperately irresistible in his black tux and crisp white shirt. I smile and give a small wave. My heart skips a beat when the hard line of his lips breaks into a dazzling smile and he nods in response. “See, not so scary, Thomas.”

He scoffs. “Not to you, maybe.” He peels my hand off his arm. “Perhaps it would be better if you released me.”

I turn and wink at him. “Scaredy-cat.”

“Absolutely, he has more money than God. He can make me disappear. I have a pregnant wife at home to think about.”

I pat him on the arm, laughing. “Thomas, stop.”

He looks at me, and for a second I believe he’s dead serious. “Tell Calista I love her. Be a good aunt to my baby.”

“Thomas, seriously—” I teasingly start to reply, but I’m interrupted by the most gorgeous man in the room.

“Maggie.” His voice is sweet elixir to my soul, calming my nerves at the idea of seeing him after my behavior yesterday—perhaps even the last few years.

I face him. “Marcus, it’s good to see you.” Our eyes lock, and I didn’t realize how true those words could be until this very moment.

“You look stunning tonight. The most beautiful woman here.” He leans in and kisses my cheek.

I close my eyes and relish the masculine scent that is all Marcus Sutton. As he starts to pull away, I grab his arm, stopping his retreat. Surprising him, and surprising myself, too.

He looks down at my hand and smiles, and his eyes move slowly up to mine. “Maggie.” His voice is a near-whisper, holding so much more meaning than just my name.

He grips my hand on his arm. For a moment, I fear he’s going to pull away. But he simply slides my hand down to his, where he twines our fingers. Holding me safe and secure.

I feel like I can breathe freely for the first time tonight.

Maybe.

Ever.

“Marcus, are you going to introduce me to your girl?” the familiar-looking man next to Marcus asks.

His girl?

Marcus’s eyes light up.

Am I his girl? Do I want to be? Does he want me to be?

His eyes never leave mine as he introduces me. “Maggie, I’d like you to meet my brother, Jacob. Jacob, this is Maggie Parker, the owner of Parker House.”

I tear my gaze away from Marcus long enough to glance at his brother. I start to pull my hand out of Marcus’s grasp, but he only squeezes it tighter.
