CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

John Carraway’s Room, Residential Wing, House of Fourteen Headquarters, Santa Monica, California, United States

When Rose, Liv and Elvis reentered the room in the House of Fourteen, it appeared that the Sandman and Plato were having a staring contest. Rose glanced at John, relieved to see that he still seemed fine, his chest rising and falling. He was asleep, but he was alive. London also was regarding his father with a thoughtful protectiveness. But Zeno Dutillet and Plato appeared to have only eyes for each other.

“What’s going on here, boys?” Liv asked, striding over and pausing between the man and the lynx staring at each other.

“He insulted my kinfolk,” Zeno said, pointing down at Plato.

“I did not,” Plato said dully, not seeming nearly as offended as the man standing over him.

Liv swiveled around, looking at London, like asking for his voice of reason.

He shrugged. “Plato said something about stardust and how it could be the death of us all. Honestly, I wasn’t really listening. They’ve been arguing since you all left.” London glanced at the clock on the bedside table. “Which wasn’t long ago. How did it go? What did Papa Creola say?”

“He said that you need to wash behind your ears,” Elvis replied, shaking a claw at London with a punishing expression.

“No, he didn’t,” Rose replied with a laugh. “But he did say that Zeno could have his freedom.”

“He did?” the Sandman asked, his voice suddenly high-pitched. “That’s great.”

Liv held up a finger. “But there’s a catch.”

“Of course, there is.” Zeno slumped slightly. “What is it?”

The Warrior presented one of the silver bracelets. “You get jewelry.”

He glared at the object. “What’s that?” Zeno sniffed the air. “It reeks of magic.”

“It’s a tracking device,” Liv stated. “You help us and you get your freedom, but you’ll be tracked. That way if you get out of line and overcome by power, as you have in the past, then I can track you down and put you to sleep…for good.”

“What’s the catch?” Zeno asked, narrowing his eyes at Liv.

“There’s not one,” she replied slyly.

Rose thought this would raise too many suspicions, so she quickly added, “You have to do your job. Mama Jamba wants you to put mortals to sleep, but for an appropriate amount of time. Not abuse your powers.”

“But I get my freedom?” Zeno asked. “And I’ll get power putting mortals to sleep for healthy periods of time?”

“That’s right,” Liv answered. “But you have to help us diagnose John and cure him. If you don’t, well, you can’t escape. And I will find you and I will put you to sleep for good. Okay?”

Zeno Dutillet seemed to consider this for a long moment. Finally, he held up both his hands and nodded. “Cuff me. I’ll wear your jewelry. I’ll wake Cousin John Carraway. And I’ll be good, if it means I get my freedom.”

Liv nodded victoriously at Rose. “Okay, let’s do it together, like Papa Creola stated.”

Rose held her open cuff up and stepped forward on one side of the Sandman.
