She looked up from her prayers and said calmly, “Child, move your bottom from my breakfast.” I was still laughing when Ragge, my Uncle Ahmed’s son, walked in.

My mother greeted him warmly then reminded me to see my uncle. “You better go,” my mother warned me, ‘or your uncle will think you are favoring my side of the family.” Ragge was a little boy when I left and I remembered taking care of him for my aunt. Now he was about twenty-two, tall and slender, and he spoke excellent English. I liked him immediately. He had an old-fashioned haircut, short around the side with a longer piece on the top. He carried an afro comb in his back pocket and every five minutes he was running it through his hair.

Ragge walked with me through the village to show me the way to his house. There were maybe sixty houses with one or two rooms in various stages of completion. People had cleared the desert brush and built basic shelters. Families who had enough money to buy building materials inhabited the best ones. They had walls of sun-dried blocks and roofs of corrugated tin. Other women had patched together huts out of whatever they could find: old tires, woven grasses and bits of tin. Some of the houses were square and fashioned of sticks, others were round Somali occles made of the long roots of the acacia tree, arched and covered with woven mats and pieces of plastic sheets. Old plastic bags stuck on the outsides of the houses fluttered in the wind. Nothing that was lightweight and might be useful was thrown out. We passed a house with the mats folded back to dry out the inside from the rain. Other dwellings were round with baked mud walls and thatched conical roofs. Different clans built different kinds of houses. None of the huts had running water and there were no sewage pipes or electricity lines or even plans for such a thing. Someone had built a
