Chapter 27

Light the Fire

[Onboard The Allied Federation Freighter Inception

Orbital Space

Above Planet Vista-VI]

The STL engine thrusters glowed an ice blue as the Inception pushed through Vista’s thin atmosphere and the ship transitioned into orbital space. Stars shined in the great distance as satellites orbited far below them.

“Imperial warships ahead…three hundred clicks,” Agent Wolf said as he positioned the ship into the rear starboard side of the Imperial armada.

“Three hundred thousand meters ain’t far. Pull back just a tad,” Aethon said. He typically had never said a word while Wolf flew. But even though Agent Wolf was an ace of a pilot, Aethon knew what was at stake, and a mistake now would doom an entire planet.

“I’ve got it, boss. Relax, enjoy another donut, and I’ll get us into position,” Wolf replied, smiling.

Aethon shook his head and zoomed his holo-screen in toward the port side of the trail ship. The vessel was just close enough he could make out its name as it was written next to their planetary flag. Aethon then opened a comms link. “Imperial Destroyer King-Guard, this is the AF Inception. We are off your port side, sliding into a follow position. We are a modified freighter and look forward to working with you,” Aethon transmitted.

“Inception, this is Imperial King-Guard, we copy. Settle in, boys, FTL jump within the next hour. Our CO will be in touch shortly—we will be Mars bound, over.”

“We copy. Standing by for CO, enjoy the ride, Inception out,” Aethon said with a smile. A long-awaited breath left his body as he kicked back in his navigator’s chair and elevated his feet on his console. Doing this was beginning to become as natural as breathing. The stress of the last thirty hours seemingly melted from his body as his eyes shut.
