CHAPTER FIVE

By the end of the day, some men had brought the carriage back to town, along with Mr. Schoen’s body. Arrangements were made for a burial the next day. The owner of the livery put the carriage inside and repaired the seat where Jess had used the board to help dig a hole. Jess stabled his horses and when he finished brushing them down, he walked over to the owner, who was wiping the dust off the carriage.

“Where are the two horses you bought off those men the other day?” he asked.

“Oh, those two fine animals over there,” he said, pointing. “Great horseflesh. I’m not sure I want to sell them yet.”

“Mrs. Schoen wants to buy them back from you.”

“Well, I got a good deal purchasing them, but if I were inclined to sell, I’d have to ask at least what they’re worth.”

“They belong to her,” advised Jess. “They’re considered stolen or even rustled in the eyes of the law.”

The man scrunched up his face in disappointment. “Well, I only paid fifty dollars for the both of them, but they gotta be worth a few hundred each. I suppose I’d have to be happy with just getting my money back. I don’t want to be called a horse thief, not in my business.”

Jess saw the distress on the man’s face and then he looked over to where the hotel was, even though he couldn’t see it from inside the livery. He thought about tipping Louis and the entire staff in the hotel café and Mrs. Schoen’s willingness to throw her dead husband’s money around like there was no end to it. He turned back to the man and smiled.

“Four hundred dollars it is then,” he said as he counted out the money and handed it to him. The man smiled widely and pocketed the money.

“You’re a very generous man, Mr. Williams,” he said.

“Mrs. Schoen is the one paying you, not me,” he said. “Now, what can you tell me about the three men who sold them to you?”

He gave a detailed description of the men as he walked outside and showed the three sets of tracks leaving his livery. They went along the side of the building and off in a direction where there was no trail.

“I thought it odd they went that way, ‘cause there ain’t anything in that direction for at least a hundred miles,” he said as he showed Jess the tracks. Jess knelt down and examined them closely before standing up.

“Is there an artist in town who could do a drawing of the men from your description?”

“The man who runs the newspaper shop can do it.”

“Go over there and have him make two copies of each and deliver them to the marshal at the jail,” Jess told him as he handed the man a five-dollar gold piece to give to the man at the newspaper shop. The livery owner headed for the shop and Jess headed for the jail to see Babbitt.

When he walked in, Babbitt looked up at him.
