I wake the next morning, my eyes still heavy with sleep and blurry. I rub them and sit up in bed. I haven’t slept like that in years, and as I gradually come to, I remember the night before. My backside and more intimate private parts are pleasantly sore, vivid reminders of our lovemaking the night before have me smiling to myself.

He’s wearing well-worn jeans slung low on his narrow hips, held up by his thick leather belt. A faded denim shirt’s tucked into his pants, and he wears a bandanna around his neck. Leather chaps and dark brown leather boots complete the rugged look, but I stop short when I see a gun slung in a holster on his hip.

“Why do you have a gun, Jace?” I ask quietly.

He slides his Stetson on his head before he comes to me.

“Just need to ride the perimeter of the ranch, make sure everything’s kosher,” he says, but I’m not sure I believe him. “I’ll make breakfast when I get back.”

I swing my legs over the bed.

“Can I come with you?”

But he shakes his head. “No, Freya,” he tells me. “Not this time. It’s cold and snowy out there, and you don’t have the proper gear.”

“Well,” I say, feeling dejected. After the night we shared, I really don’t want to be apart from him. “I can make breakfast while you’re gone?”

His eyes twinkle at me. “You know how to make oatmeal?”

“I... can figure it out,” I tell him, biting my lip. “It can’t be that hard.”

“Alright, darlin’,” he says, tipping his hat to me, and God, what that does to my chest. I go all warm inside, and I need to touch him once more.

“Kiss me before you go?” I ask quietly. I don’t care that it’s obvious I’m crushing on him. How can I help myself? He’s hot and dominant and has taken good care of me, even though we just met.

The sound of his boots on the hardwood floor makes my heart thunder in my chest. My hair is tousled, and I’m naked, but I don’t care. He bends down and the strong masculine scent of him, leather and spice, overwhelms me just before he brushes his lips to mine in a brief, chaste kiss, then quickly pulls away and tugs a lock of my hair. “I do more than that, and I ain’t never gonna get out there and do what I need to,” he says with a wink.
